town about 60 miles northeast of new york city. the death toll at the sandy hook elementary school stands at 26, including 20 children, some of them kindergarteners. and the principal of the school was killed as well. the gunman, 20-year-old adam lanza, armed with two handguns, opened fire in the kindergarten classroom where his mother was a teacher. her body was found later at her home. after the shootings, the police say adam lanza took his own life at the school. jim axelrod tells us how it all unfolded. jim? >> reporter: well, scott, it was just before -- just after 9:00 this morning at the sandy hook elementary school, which is right down the road here, a kindergarten through fourth grade school, so early this kids were still delivering their attendance list from their classrooms to the main office. as we say, a little after 9:00, the gunman apparently walked into the school and started shooting. police got 911 calls and kids could hear screaming coming over the intercom. the school was quickly placed on lockdown. teachers locking doors, pulling shades, keeping kids away from

police are trying to track down the person who gunned down a young man in the city's bay view district. police say the 18-year-old victim was shot at least once at about 10:00 last night on oceola lane near lasalle. a friend of the victim's drove him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. his name has not yet been released. >>> an investigation under way after a passer by discovered a body. at about 11:30 this morning, district police were notified of a body that had been discovered at point pinol regional. the body is that of a male but didn't release any other details. they have not said yet whether the body could be that of a 77- year-old man that went missing in island strait last week. investigators hope to have more information tomorrow. >>> a hiker reports a sexual assault, we have details on how authorities are handling an attack on a well used east bay trail. >>> pushing for tighter gun laws, a bill senator dianne feinstein plans to introduce in an effort of keeping others including children from becoming victims of a mass shooting. >> charlotte, daniel, olivia, josephi

: the streets of egypt's second largest city were filled with clashing islamists and their opponents today. the groups confronted each other in alexandria. it was the eve of a final-round vote on a draft constitution that's backed by islamists and president mohammed morsi. supporters of morsi and protesters threw rocks at each other, and riot police intervened with tear gas. officials said at least 40 people were injured. it was unclear who started the fight. north korea has detained an american citizen, and says he confessed to unspecified crimes. he was identified today as kenneth bae, a korean-american tour operator from washington state. north korean state media said he entered the country, with a tour, on november 3. the north has detained five other americans since 2009. all were released, eventually. american leaders past and present paid tribute today to the late senator daniel inouye of hawaii. a crowd filled the national cathedral in washington for the service honoring the japanese- american who became a war hero and served in the senate more than 50 years. president obama recall
